Downtown Kennesaw — the old Big Shanty core around Depot Park — is about 5 minutes from the shop straight down toward the tracks. It is one of our closest and most frequent stops, from the historic cottages to the new townhomes by the depot.
Downtown Kennesaw, the historic Big Shanty railroad core, is where the city began. The streets around Depot Park and the Southern Museum hold century-old cottages built along the tracks, and in recent years new mixed-use infill like the Terraces at Depot Park, completed around 2018, has added modern townhomes right beside them.
That mix of very old and very new is what makes downtown unique to service. On the same block we might work on a 1900s cottage with retrofitted systems and a 2018 townhome with modern high-efficiency equipment, and the two could not be more different under the hood.
Downtown Kennesaw Homes and Their HVAC
The historic cottages of Old Town were built long before central air existed, so their HVAC is retrofitted — ductwork threaded through tight, finished spaces, systems squeezed into closets and small attics, and comfort challenges that come with old walls, minimal insulation, and rooms never designed for forced-air cooling. These homes reward a technician who respects the structure and works around its constraints.
The newer Depot Park townhomes from around 2018 are the opposite: compact, well-sealed, and fitted with modern high-efficiency systems and smart thermostats. Their challenges are about right-sizing for a tight envelope and managing humidity in a small, sealed space. We serve both ends of downtown, and we tailor the approach entirely to which era of home we are standing in.
We Know the Downtown Kennesaw Streets
We know downtown from the historic blocks around the Southern Museum to the newer Terraces at Depot Park. Working the Big Shanty core means switching gears constantly — a careful retrofit on a century-old cottage one visit, a modern high-efficiency tune-up on a 2018 townhome the next.
Last year we handled two downtown calls in the same week that captured the contrast. One was a historic Old Town cottage where a retrofitted system's ductwork ran through a cramped attic and needed resealing to reach the back rooms. The other was a 2018 Depot Park townhome where a tight, sealed envelope was trapping humidity, and we adjusted the modern system's setup to hold the indoor dew point down. Same neighborhood, two completely different homes.
